West Siders Against Annexation political protest song
July 2, 2009 - The political action group known as West Siders Against Annexation out of Evansville Indiana approached JR Utopian Studios with the concept of creating a political rallying song. Its purpose was to promote discussion of their opposition to annexation by the city, and to increase website traffic. The song is posted here on the WSAA website.
Website traffic tripled as word of the song spread locally in the West Side of Evansville. This, in part, helped the WSAA team raise legal funding to support their cause.
The WSAA team decided to use the song on local FM radio, and a 60-second spot of the song was re-recorded at JRUS. In May, that spot aired more than 20 times on WABX 105.7 Evansville's Classic Rock to promote the WSAA cause.
In late June, the local affiliate of Fox News, WTVW Channel 7 in Evansville, took note of the song and devoted a primetime news segment to the song's creation and purpose, which aired on July 1, 2009. You can view the archived video here. The result of the segment has been another big bump in web traffic, and more importantly, a strongly increasing citywide awareness of the annexation and WSAA issues, the primary goal of the WSAA group.
A 60 second sample is below - this is the radio spot. The full 3:31 song can be heard here.
